But his genius for solving crimes means he constantly has to get his hands dirty, helping the police to crack their most difficult cases.
While this English Professor T Sounds a lot like a Belgian Professor we already know, fans of the Walter's Choice series — the PBS foreign language programming collection — will want to mark their calendars, Sunday nights at 10:00 p.m., for the reboot. There is a lot that can change with a reboot and fun to be had in any new adaptation. As PBS fans, we’ve seen and loved new interpretations of old stories time and time again. Fans of the original shows and newcomers alike have enjoyed the telling and retelling of these classic stories.
PBS, and Masterpiece on PBS, has never shied away from a reboot, retelling or a prequel. In fact, some of our most beloved programs are reinterpretations of heroes, detectives, romances, mysteries and more. In honor of the premiere of our new Professor T, let’s take a look back at some of our favorite PBS reboots, prequels, spinoffs and more. Here are our favorite PBS reboots that are currently streaming on KCTS9.org.
All Creatures Great and Small
Earlier this year, fans of the original series and those new to the story loved the All Creatures Great and Small reboot. True to the original, audiences adored the pastoral tales based on James Herriot’s beloved books. Viewers were also eager to learn that Season 2 is already in the works. The original series ran from 1978 to 1990, which bodes well for the success of the new show.
Van der Valk
Amsterdam — city of bikes, boats and bodies. Marc Warren stars as steely-eyed cop Piet van der Valk in Van der Valk, based on Nicolas Freeling’s legendary crime thrillers. Fans of the crime drama will also remember the original 1970s series.
Tcheky Karyo revives his role as French detective Julien Baptiste in this spinoff of The Missing. While visiting his daughter in Amsterdam, Baptiste becomes drawn into a missing persons case that may be connected to a human trafficking gang.
Swashbuckling Ross Poldark rides again in the popular reboot of the 1970s Poldark series. Both shows were based on the Winston Graham novels. Fans swooned for the Aidan Turner vehicle, but they never forgot their first hero. The original Ross Poldark, played by Robin Ellis, even made a guest appearance on the reboot!
The Durrells in Corfu
While there have been many interpretations of the lovable, quirky Durrell family — inspired by Gerald Durrell’s memoir My Family and Other Animals — the two most notable interpretations prior to the popular 2016 reboot were: My Family and Other Animals (the 1987 TV series) and My Family and Other Animals (the 2005 film).
Shaun Evans charms audiences with his portrayal of the cerebral and solitary Detective Constable Morse in this Inspector Morse prequel, chronicling Morse as a young man. Inspector Morse ran from 1987 to 2000! And, Endeavour has become an equally loved member of the PBS family, as it is about to enter its eighth season!
Rebecca Gibney stars as Dr. Jane Halifax in this compelling Australian mystery series. After years as a university professor, Jane steps back into her previous role as a forensic psychiatrist when a police task force needs her help to find a serial killer. Set in Melbourne, this series is a sequel to the popular Halifax f.p. series, which aired from 1994 to 2002.
